Privacy Policy
Effective May 2, 2026 · Version 1.0
1. The Short Version
Glean ("we", "our", "us") is a clipboard utility for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, developed by Xinyan Studio. This Privacy Policy describes how Glean handles information when you use the app.
The summary above is the complete substance of our practice. The remainder of this document explains the technical and legal details that support those statements.
2. What Glean Stores, and Where
Glean automatically saves the items you copy — text, links, images, code snippets, and files — so that you can retrieve them later. This data is stored in two locations only:
- On your device. Each item you copy is written to a local database within the Glean app sandbox on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- In your private iCloud container. If you have iCloud sync enabled in iOS or macOS, your local database is synchronized to a private CloudKit container associated exclusively with your Apple ID.
The iCloud container is managed by Apple. It is not accessible to Xinyan Studio, to any third party, or to any other Glean user. We do not operate any backend infrastructure that holds, processes, or transmits your clipboard data.
3. What We Do Not Do
For complete clarity, we want to enumerate what Glean does not do:
- We do not operate any server that receives, stores, or processes your data.
- We do not include any third-party SDKs, including but not limited to advertising networks, analytics frameworks, attribution tools, crash reporters, or social-media trackers.
- We do not require user accounts. There is no sign-up, no login, no profile.
- We do not display advertisements.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone, because we do not have your data.
- We do not track you across apps or websites.
Accordingly, in our Apple App Store privacy disclosure, all data categories are marked as "Data Not Collected".
4. Permissions Glean Requests
Glean requests only the minimum permissions necessary to function. Each is explained below.
4.1 Clipboard Access
Glean reads from the system clipboard in order to save what you copy. This reading occurs locally on your device. iOS and macOS will display the standard "paste notification" banner when Glean accesses the clipboard, exactly as for any other application.
4.2 Keyboard Extension and "Allow Full Access"
Glean includes an optional iOS keyboard extension that lets you insert items from your clipboard history directly into any text field. To access your synchronized history from within the keyboard extension, iOS requires you to enable "Allow Full Access" for the keyboard.
We want to be transparent about why this permission is required and what it does not mean in the case of Glean:
- iOS keyboard extensions run in a restricted sandbox by default. They cannot read shared application data, including the iCloud-synchronized clipboard database, without Full Access.
- Full Access is therefore technically required for the keyboard to show your history. Without it, the keyboard works only with items you have just copied during the current session.
- The Glean keyboard extension does not request network access. It does not transmit anything you type, anything you paste, or anything else, to any server — including ours, because we have no server.
- The keyboard extension only reads from your existing clipboard history. It does not log, capture, or analyze your keystrokes or the content of fields you are typing into.
Enabling Full Access is your choice. The main app and clipboard saving work fully without it.
4.3 Share Extension
Glean provides a Share Sheet extension so you can save content from other apps. The extension only handles the specific item you actively share into Glean. It does not run in the background.
4.4 Photo Library (Optional)
If you choose to save an image from your photo library into Glean, iOS will request photo library access at that moment. Glean only reads the photos you explicitly select.
5. iCloud Sync
Glean uses Apple's CloudKit framework to synchronize your clipboard history between your devices. The data is stored in your private CloudKit database, which is bound to your Apple ID and is not shared with Xinyan Studio.
Apple manages the encryption, transmission, and storage of this data according to its own published practices. You can review Apple's iCloud privacy practices at apple.com/legal/privacy.
You can disable iCloud sync at any time in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud, or in macOS System Settings → [your name] → iCloud. Disabling sync stops all synchronization; existing local data on each device is unaffected.
6. Your Rights and Choices
Because all of your Glean data resides on devices you control or in your personal iCloud account, you can exercise full control without contacting us:
- Access and review. All your saved items are visible inside the Glean app at any time.
- Deletion. You may delete individual items, clear your entire history, or uninstall the app. Uninstalling Glean and signing out of iCloud removes all associated data.
- Export. Export functionality is available from within the app where supported.
Where applicable law (such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation or the California Consumer Privacy Act) grants additional rights — including the right to know, the right to deletion, the right to data portability, or the right to non-discrimination — those rights apply to you regardless of your location, to the extent we hold any data about you. As stated above, we do not.
7. Children's Privacy
Glean is rated 4+ and is not directed at children under the age of 13. Because Glean does not collect any personal information from anyone, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children either.
8. Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the version number and effective date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will additionally notify users through an in-app notice on the next launch.
9. Applicable Law
Glean is published from the People's Republic of China and complies with applicable Chinese laws and regulations governing personal information, including the Personal Information Protection Law, the Data Security Law, and the Cybersecurity Law.
For users in other jurisdictions, we additionally honor the principles of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), to the extent applicable.
